System requirements

What KS1 needs on a workstation, server, terminal server or virtual machine.

KS1 workstation

  • Operating system (32/64 bit): Microsoft Windows 8, Windows 10 or newer
  • Processor: current office standard, at least 2 GHz
  • Memory: at least 2 GB for KS1 (depending on other applications)
  • Free disk space for the installation: 1 GB
  • MAPI or Outlook, Thunderbird
  • Screen resolution: at least 1280 × 1024 pixels

Databases – single-user installation

  • Databases are stored on the same computer
  • Free disk space: 1 GB

Databases – multi-user installation

  • Databases are stored on a computer reachable by all workstations (server OS or standard Windows); the drive must be shared with all KS1 workstations. No software is installed on the data server.
  • Server OS: Microsoft Windows Server, Linux, …
  • Memory: SQL Server needs at least 1 GB for KS1
  • Free disk space: 1 GB with Microsoft Access, 5 GB with Microsoft SQL Server
  • Network speed: from 100 Mbit (a well-performing network is required)
  • Optional: Microsoft SQL Server 2012 or newer

Terminal server

KS1 can run on a terminal server – each user works in their own Windows session via Remote Desktop, so KS1 does not need to be installed on every client. Ideal for working from home. You will need an experienced administrator; please test performance, multi-user operation and load before going live, and check the network performance.

Virtual machines

With virtualisation software (VirtualBox, Parallels, VMware …) KS1 runs on any operating system, e.g. macOS or Linux, inside a Windows VM. The same requirements as for a workstation apply.
